Quarterly Update
Funding for the San Antonio Mathematics and Science Education Partnership (SAMSEP) was granted by the National Science Foundation October 2008. This grant supports a two-year planning phase to develop a comprehensive Mathematics and Science Partnership in San Antonio.

Efforts to date have focused on developing and broadening the partnership.

  • December 3—meeting with Bexar County Superintendents at Region 20 on pro- posed San Antonio Mathematics and Sci- ence Education Partnership (SAMSEP)
  • December 5—meeting with College and University Academic Vice Presidents at UTSA Downtown campus on SAMSEP
  • January 30—Presentation to Bexar County Math Collaborative at Region 20 on up- coming meeting with teachers
  • February 28—strategy session with 65 K-12 and higher education faculty partici- pants hosted by NEISD STEM Academy at Lee High School

Tasks needed for complete proposal:

  • Pinpoint specific focus
  • Identify major elements
  • Establish road map of the project
  • Clarify data needs
  • Develop budget that supports project goals

Summary of current emphasis from meetings with administrators and faculty:

  • Partnerships between K-12 and IHE to address the vertical and horizontal alignment of mathematics and science curricula to ensure success for all students in STEM courses/ programs.
  • Partnerships with business to identify STEM curricula refinement to meet current and future community needs.
  • Ongoing staff development that includes community participation to address content knowledge and the relevance of STEM education in mathematics and science for 1) elementary teachers and 2) all teachers K-16 with focus on differentiation and pedagogy strategies.
  • Parental partnerships to provide understanding of the importance for STEM education and the necessity for post secondary schooling as well as provide support for parents to help ensure success for their students.

Next steps:

  • Prepare for next step of NSF funding submission of $12.5 million grant
  • Identify significant data sets
  • Launch SAMSEP web site
  • Solidify management structure
  • Solicit proposals for pilot programs
